World War II Guard veteran honored

WATERFORD--Soldiers assigned to the New York Army National Guards Honor Guard conduct graveside military honors at the funeral of Cpl. Wilfred Spike Mailloux, a 100-year old veteran of the New York National Guards 27th Infantry Division who fought on the Island of Saipan during World War II, at St. Michaels Cemetery in Waterford, New York on May 7, 2024. Mailloux, a member of B Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, was wounded during a massive Japanese Army banzai attack against the regiment on July 17, 1944. Mailloux, who enlisted in the National Guard to earn $5 per drill, was the last surviving member of the Cohoes-based company.
